Intro to Sashiko
In these classes, we will explore the ancient – and still popular – needle art of sashiko. Sashiko started out as crude mending, but soon developed into a complex and highly symbolic style of folk hand embroidery. It relies exclusively on the humble running stitch, making it accessible to beginning stitchers, while also offering a creative challenge to
experienced needle workers. The rhythmic, quiet stitching is perfect for stitching in community and can feel almost meditative.
Each 3-hour session will focus on one pattern. This time should allow everyone to complete small sample, suitable to frame, to use as a mending patch, or to turn into a coaster. Experienced stitchers will have time to experiment with different color and scale options.
The first three sessions are stand-alone, so that you can take any (or all) of them with no previous experience. The fourth will require experience with at least one sashiko pattern.
